As cocktails go, the Cosmopolitan is ubiquitous!

It is made in almost every bar on the planet and is the cocktail of choice for many people, including such cultural icons as Robert Evans, former head of Paramount Studios, for whom the Cosmo was like mothers milk.

The Cosmo has become a legend, and it is pink. The cosmo was not the typical masculine style of drink that was often ordered by male patrons of swank bars or dining establishments throughout the latter part of the 20th century. Somehow, however, it became fashionable for both men and women to order this very feminine looking martini-like cocktail along with Sidecars, Manhattans and Whisky Sours.

Whether it is made with Ketel One, Grey Goose, Belvedere, or any number of high-quality vodkas, there is so much more to a Cosmo than just the vodka.

The genesis of this column came as the result of a Cosmo experience that I had recently at the patio bar at Mar-a-Lago (Donald Trump’s house/club in Palm Beach, Florida) where a young South African bar tender concocted the greatest Cosmo that I’ve ever had. Having been trained at the London Bar Institute and at Richard Branson’s Kensington Roof Gardens in London, this young bartender produced the most perfectly balanced and delicious Cosmo that I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. It was the perfect hue of pink; and had the perfect balance of fruit and alcohol. It also contained the perfect amount of lime pulp and tiny shards of ice, which is the secret to a great Cosmo; there must some be texture to the pink liquidity. Without it, the Cosmo would be very one dimensional It was, de facto, the perfect cosmo.

Served in a chilled martini glass, it was made with Ketel One vodka (a long time favourite of mine) and was neither cloyingly sweet, from too much cointreau, nor was it too alcoholic, with an excess of vodka to make it a power cocktail. It was perfect. Many bartenders will double up on the vodka to deliver a swift jolt to the brain, but that single act puts this otherwise sublime cocktail off balance, as would be the case by adding either too much cranberry juice or cointreau.

A Cosmo must be served very cold, preferably in an iced martini glass so that as it is sipped, the Cosmo stays frigid until completely consumed. At which point in time, it’s definitely time for another.

Cheers.

Recipe for the perfect Cosmo::

In a martini shaker, pour in :

2 oz of Ketel One vodka

1 oz of Cointreau,

2 oz of Ocean Spray cranberry juice cocktail

Squeeze in the juice and pulp of 1/2 of a ripe lime, add crushed ice and shake for 30 seconds,.

Pour into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a slice of lime..

Although some of these suggestions may be obvious – it is sensible to take them into account. Let’s face it, where real estate sales are down 50% in the GTA versus last year, how you present your property in this buyer’s market is vital.

Curb Appeal – It is important to make a good first impression. A buyer may not even approach an open house if the frontage presents an unappealing impression. Great curb appeal is a must – trim the bushes, sweep the leaves, shovel the snow and fill the planters!

Clutterless – Declutter as much as you can. Pack up Grandma’s collectibles and your vacation trinkets and ready them for the move. Let potential buyers imagine their own bevy of knick knacks in the space.

Clear Out – Make use of a good storage facility and clear out extra furniture. If a room is minimally appointed it will look and feel larger. This also applies to your storage areas. Clear out your storerooms, junk cupboards and furnace rooms.

Closets – Remove and pack up as much as you can from all of the closets. An over-stuffed closet leaves an impression of inadequacy. You want the potential buyer to feel that there is plenty of room for their belongings.

Colour – While you may appreciate the opposing forces of the neon orange wall running up against purple trim – most potential homebuyers will lose focus faced with these visual stimuli. Neutrality and inoffensive colour schemes are recommended.

Create a Stage – Whether you hire a professional stager or prepare your property yourself, the goal is the same – make your home stand out and be buyer friendly.

Companion’s gear – Pets! You may love your pet but not everyone will. When showing your house, send your companion to family and friends for a while. Remove dog bowls, kitty litter stations and buckets of play toys.

Control Odors – We can all attest to the fact that if we are in an environment with an offensive odor, we all look for the nearest exit. We want potential buyers to spend a sufficient amount of time at our listings. Pet, diaper and strong cooking odors must be controlled. Offering the smell of freshly baked bread, while inviting, is quite impractical. Slightly warming vanilla on foil in the oven can do the same trick with little effort!

Cheerful – Have your home look welcoming. Open the blinds, put out guest towels and soaps and put out some fresh flowers.

Clean, Clean, Clean! – Keeping the environment organized and dust free may be tiresome (especially with children in the home), but is essential.

If cleaning and organizing are not your forte, there are plenty of reputable services that specialize in cleaning, organizing and staging that you can use. Your Real Estate Representative should have many references to offer.

As winter approaches and snow begins to fall, Alaska always comes to mind for those of us who have had the experience of visiting this incredible state.

It gained a reputation for some unknown reason as a seniors’ place to visit. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Its natural beauty is overwhelming for the very young to the very old. In truth, there is so much to say about Alaska that words do not and could not capture the experience of it all.

Most people visit in the summer. Of course the summer is very short up north.

In July and August the sun rises at 3:30 or 4 in the morning and does not set until approximately 11 at night. This is an unusual experience for those who live closer to the equator. Seeing snow and ice in August is thrilling. As much as we get tired of the snow in the south and dislike driving in it, Alaskan snow is beautiful.

For those who love the outdoors the traditional activities in Alaska are very exciting. Kayaking in a parka, hiking on some of the most exquisite trails in North America and whale watching are everyday experiences. Watching bald eagles fly on the same day as seeing salmon jump and seals and sea lions playing in the water are everyday occurrences.

A personal favorite of those on our trip was visiting a husky training centre. It was there that I went on a unique ride.

Dog sledding is exhilarating. The strength and magnificece of the dogs is overwhelming, and they run fast! It was at the dog training centre that I first met an Alaskan who was born and lives north of the Arctic Circle. How fascinating her life has been. And how her vision of the world is so different from ours.

Alaskans are by and large, content. They travel by snowmobile. Cars are rare in the very north. Shopping and buzzing around are not in their sphere of thinking. Most have no interest in the streets of big cities. They live in Alaska because they love nature and the simplicity of their lives.

All of this said, there is a very sad part to this story. As the ice melts, people will have to travel farther and father north to have a true Alaskan experience. We now know that hills and mountains that were full of snow five years ago are now barren. This once in a lifetime experience will not be attainable to future generations if we do not control the melting ice.

For years, Alaskan park rangers have been letting southerners know that their part of the world is very fragile. We saw the ice floating in the waters that were in one piece just a few short years ago. For this reason and many more, those who are interested should not walk but run to arrange a trip to Alaska.

Buying a home can be the most exciting, frustrating and costly event you will likely ever experience!

Aside from the obvious purchase price (and let’s hope you have a good agent to negotiate for you!) ,there are many additional costs that you do not want to come as a surprise, but so often do.

Some of these budget stretching figures you may have anticipated and some you may have not, but best keep a checklist so as not to overlook this swell of expenses.

Quite a few of the Home Buyer’s expenses relate to MORTGAGES AND LENDERS.

Mortgage loan insurance is required when you need a mortgage loan that exceeds 80% of the purchase price of the property. This coverage exists not to protect you, but to protect the lender from you defaulting on the mortgage. The insurance premium is calculated as a percentage of the mortgage and is based on the size of the down payment in relation to the total purchase price. Premiums can be paid in a lump sum or added to mortgage payments depending on the lender. An application fee will usually be incurred as well.

How much will this be? 1.75% for over 80% financing up to 2.75% for 95% financing.

A mortgage broker fee may apply If you use the services of a mortgage broker to arrange a mortgage on your behalf.

How much will this cost? These fees vary dramatically, but more recently it is the lenders that are paying these fees.

Your lender will require a property appraisal – an appraisal fee will likely be passed on to you. The complexity and magnitude of the task will determine the cost.

How much? For a typical house purchase the fee is under $500.

While negotiating your purchase, you (via your real estate agent) may ask for an up-to-date land survey. If one is not furnished, you may be required by the lender to have one done at your expense.

How much? Approximately $1200.

The lender will require proof that you have secured Property insurance for the replacement value of the house and the contents. This is a must since your home is the collateral for the mortgage loan.

How much? $500 and up annually.

Some one-time fees you will joyfully incur include:

· Home inspections, in some cases, are contracted by the vendor prior to listing the property. If not, it is customary to include a home inspection in your offer.

How much? $400 to $500 depending on the size of the property.

· A purchaser has the option of buying Title insurance to protect from problems with property title.

How much? For a property valued at $400,000, title insurance is $200 and would rise to $800 for a $1,000,000 property.

· We cannot forget about our LAWYER! Even the most basic of home purchases will require the services of a lawyer. Lawyer fees can cover costs associated with reviewing the offer, title searches, preparing mortgage documents and drawing up the title deed.

How much? These fees vary from approximately $1000 to $2000.

· Moving costs will vary. Are you renting a truck on your own and ‘encouraging’ family and friends to help you move or are you hiring a capable moving company? Consider if you have to professionally package and/or store any items.

How much? Quite difficult to give an estimate here since this cost will vary with the size and quality of the move as well as the distance.

· If you are purchasing a condominium, the seller will either provide a Status Certificate or you will need to pay for the certificate and supporting documents. These papers outline the Condominium Corporation’s financial and legal state.

How much? The cost of a Status Certificate is $100.

· Land Transfer Tax includes both Provincial and Municipal land transfer taxes. Most real estate websites and the Toronto Real Estate Board site have land transfer tax calculators. These taxes are calculated based on the purchase price as a fixed percentage and as percentages on a graduated scale. First time home buyers may qualify for some land transfer tax rebates up to a $2000 provincial rebate and a $3725 municipal rebate.

How much? Definitely the most sizeable cost to incur. Land Transfer Tax on a $500,000 property in Toronto would be $12,200.

· In general, GST does not apply to resale homes but does apply to newly constructed homes. However, the developer seller will most often include this GST in the purchase price.

· Adjustments occur in most property transactions .The vendor must be credited on a prorated basis for taxes and utilities that have been prepaid beyond the closing date.

Whether your spending $200,000 or $7,000,000 for your new home the additional costs do add up!

The search for a new home can be very exciting, but also constitutes a major life shift. Being prepared and forewarned for the costs that can lie ahead just make us all more savvy consumers.

In fact, I think that everyone who goes to Don as an accountant probably thinks of him as their friend! He is relaxed and laid back and ever so slightly irreverent. If you are feeling intimidated by your tax return or an issue that is pressing on you, Don can set your mind at ease in a matter of moments.

Now that tax season is approaching, I asked Don if he could share just a few, common sense tax tips. Everyone’s accounting needs are different, but here are just a few basic helpful tips.

Keep all your receipts in one place.

On restaurant and entertainment receipts, include the tip in your total.

Own or lease your car personally, not through your corporation.

Do not have the same bank accountant for business and personal use.

Get a credit card and use it exclusively for business purposes.

Everybody’s situation is unique. Do not assume that your friend’s solutions will work for you.

Beware of any scheme that promises to save you taxes.

Never ignore or avoid the taxman. Let your accountant deal with them immediately.

Avoid interest and penalties by filing your taxes on time.

Hire a professional, and listen to their advice!

Simple…hope it’s a start.

Brookline, MA is from the air, indistinguishable from Boston. If it weren’t for the discreet street sign near Fenway park, no-one would be able to tell where the city ends and the town begins.

This is a shame because Brookline is often overlooked as a tourist and culinary destination. Most visitors to Boston will do a traditional tour linking Faneuil Hall, Newbury Street and Harvard Square in Cambridge.

While this is worth your time, you will have missed a hidden gem.So take the afternoon and hop on to the Green Line towards Coolidge Corner. Once there, you will be taken and soothed by the unique urban-village atmosphere in central Brookline. There are no outstanding monuments or buildings, yet you feel that this is a place with character.

What makes it unique is the sum of its parts. You are a few blocks away from one of the best independent book shops in the US, an independent movie theater, JFK’s birthplace, the best hospitals (Brigham and Women’s, Children’s, Beth Israel,…).Urban and suburban living, upscale shops and recreational parks, apartment buildings and large estates mingle to allow you to decide whether you are in a city or village mood.

In the busy Harvard Street, you will find a Jewish deli named “Zaftigs” a Yiddish adjective meaning (”pleasingly plump and full-figured”). It is extremely busy on Sundays for brunch and is best enjoyed mid-weeks for lunch. The atmosphere is down to earth and enjoyable. My personal favorite is the grilled Reuben sandwich. It is made of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and butter-grilled slices of dark rye. Slightly warm, it reveals it wide and earthy array of tastes once your teeth crunch into the delicately crusty rye bread. Accompany it with home-made fries and you are ready for an afternoon walk.

Your stroll should extend into the near exclusive Cottage Farm near Boston University. The name “Cottage Farm” derives from the then popular English Cottage style of building and associated lifestyle of genteel country living, particularly the Gothic Revival form.

The Churchill Arms

119 Kensington Church St., Kensington, London, W8 7LN

Nearest Tube Stations: Notting Hill Gate, High Street Kensington.

The Churchill Arms is a gem of a pub. It is nestled half-way between the now famous Notting Hill district and the posh High Street Kensington.

Before you go there, however, I invite you to take a short detour.

Starting from High Street Kensington, head towards Kensington Palace. The palace, is officially the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Princess Diana used to live there. If you are lucky, you might see a helicopter land in the impeccably manicured lawn. Yes, this was one of the Princess of Wales’ means of transportation.

Then, as you face the main entrance of the Palace, head left while keeping the gates of the palace on your right. You will reach wide road named Kensington Palace Gardens. It is a mostly pedestrian area with grand, out-sized mansions on either side. It is said that 18-19 Kensington Palace Gardens is one the most expensive property in the world. It was bought in 2004 by the Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who in 2008 was listed by Forbes Magazine as the fourth richest man in the world. Along with three mews houses at the rear of the property, Mr Mittal bought it for £57,145,967.

Casually strolling up and down this road, you will be rubbing shoulders with current occupiers and residents which include:

- the Indian High Commissioner
- Jonathan Hunt, founder of Foxtons Real Estate
- the ambassador of France
- a Saudi royal
- the Embassy of Nepal
- the Russian ambassador
- Leonard Blavatnik, a Russian whose net worth is said to be around $7 billion
- Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei
- Noam Gottesman, hedge-fund trader. Said to have now been sold to Lakshmi Mittal for £117 million, for the use of his son Aditya.

The Romania, Czech and Norwegian ambassador may also turn up, returning from a trip to the nearby Whole Foods.

Now, you are finally ready for a well deserved pint and Thai food; yes, I did say Thai food. You see, a strange thing happened to pubs in England. Somehow, they entered into a symbiotic relationship with Thai restaurateurs. By itself, the pad-tai at the Churchill arms is worth the detour.

The pub casts its charm several blocks away from where its stands. From spring and well into autumn, the pub’s flower display radiates with color and joy. It was voted ‘Boozer In Bloom’ at Chelsea Flower Show 2007. The reds and pinks contrast with the mostly brown facades bringing the best out of each other.

Enter the pub and you will be overwhelmed by the decor. Pictures, memorabilia, collection of butterflies and other curiosities hand on the wall while an eclectic array of objects including copper pans, hang from the ceiling. It is truly a case of more is more. Objects are sometimes only centimeters apart.

As you might expect, the pub is a local favorite. The best time to go there, is during a week day in mid-afternoon. The range of beers is more than adequate, but it is the combination of decor, Thai food and location which makes it must-see while visiting London.

Louisa McCormack went to the University of Toronto with me, and we were both residents of Margaret Addison Hall, on Charles Street.
Louisa always had a look of devout professionalism about her. Always cheery and friendly, and always seeming as if she was just rushing to meet a deadline.
Along the path of life since those university days, Louisa and I keep bumping into each other. Friends of friends,– you know how it goes.
It didn’t take me long to put two and two together. Why is this dynamic journalist always writing and always working, but I don’t see her published that many places…????
Louisa is among the most gifted women I know, to say the least. It just didn’t make sense.

I took my daughter with me down to TYPE on Queen, for the launch of Louisa’s new book, the Catch.

Finally, (exhale) although it is not her first, I was thrilled to see Louisa putting her name to her work.
We have all heard the term “ghost writer”. Well largely when I thought of Louisa, that is what I thought. Many books that we have all delved into that seem to be written by this or that person, have in fact been written by Louisa on their behalf. So there’s a little secret. Just because x person says that they have authored a new book on their unique concept or brand or idea, not so fast—it may be Louisa’s writing that you are reading!
We will never tell, and furthermore, neither will she!

I am very excited about this piece. How does one entice one’s ghost writer friend to, as it were, give up the ghost?

Now the story can take an easier turn. We have all said at one time or another that we wished we could just write that novel that we have in our heads. “Nobody would ever believe that story, you should really write it down…”
I asked Louisa what motivates her, and how she could advise theperfectconnections on this subject. Louisa has condensed some cold hard facts for us and they make sense.
I hope you enjoy what she has to share with you as much as I enjoy having Louisa as a friend.
Try to find a way to meet her, buy her book and read it. Read her blog. Send her a note. She is one of the hidden jewels that we all need to pay much more attention to!

So thank you Louisa, and thank you my dear readers for letting me share this with you:

Buckle up—it’s a long ride. Three to five years of steady work on average, two if you put pretty well everything else on hold.

Your book will not come close to paying for itself. A decent advance for a novel nowadays is $10,000 — $20,000. Few books “earn out” their advances. Those seven figure advances you hear about in the news? The literary equivalent of a 47-year-old in Hollywood becoming joyfully preggers.

A bestseller in Canadian terms sells 5,000 copies. Believe it or not, that’s a lot. Note to self – buy more books.

Anyone can write. Only writers rewrite. You may have toiled over a paragraph until your blood ran to lava, but when it became obvious it was total crud you scraped it all away. That took a hell of a lot of brain muscle. My congratulations on your great shape.

Midnight oil is for drama queens. Unless you really are tempestuously brilliant, the best work gets done as methodically as coal mining. You will come to love your dark tunnel, flashlight and jaunty hard hat.

There’s no real fun part. You worry when you write it, you worry as it’s edited, you worry while it’s promoted, you fret when it’s reviewed, you’re dismayed by your Amazon ranking, then you start all over again. Well, fun is for kids.

There is no point giving up when it dawns on you that you’re not a genius and others may well be so. Non-geniuses are still allowed to write books. And they probably have much better table manners.

You can write like an angel, plot like a demon and have the voice of a god, but if your long length fiction is about a contemporary adult female, it’s chick lit and that’s that. Cheer up. Jane Austen wrote the chick lit of her time.

Many people will tell you that you should “go on Oprah.” Act like that had never occurred to you. Then feel free to suggest to them in turn that they hit up their fairy godmother for new shoes and check every rainbow for a pot of gold.

Anything is worth doing, no matter how much on the cultural wane, no matter how life unaltering, no matter how deep it drags you into your own little world, if you feel like your existence would be somewhat nonsensical without giving it a shot.

Most of the time our experts are only too happy to reveal themselves, but we had to do some undercover work and promise not to divulge our sources here. There is nothing that will alarm you, but here are a few things you need to know that you might otherwise not know.

Research Plastic Surgeons in your area thoroughly and be sure that they are trained and specialize in Cosmetic Surgery. Try to consult with at least 3 before making a final decision.

Choose a surgeon that seems honest and spends time with you analyzing your needs and answering your questions. Some have great bedside manner and take time to explain, others do not. If you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts. Once you make a decision to go with someone, be NICE to the secretary and office staff!! Surgeons get treated with great respect and staff are sometimes less kindly treated. You’d be smart to play politics here!

Here are some things you may not have thought of:

You and your sister can both go to the same surgeon, for the same procedure. You may end up with totally different results. This can relate to issues of post op pain and ease or difficulty in healing.

If you are a smoker, you will have a more difficult time healing well. If you are a heavy smoker you stand a high chance of having tissue breakdown during healing. With certain procedures, especially those with nipple involvement or umbilical involvement or any facial surgery, you risk the chance of some of your tissue becoming ‘necrotic’ or dying when healing – which means you can lose that area. A reputable surgeon will insist on you quitting smoking prior to these procedures. This can not be overemphasized!

When you have multiple procedures, or a large procedure there are a lot of sutures involved, you stand more chance of having some of your wound sites re-opening in small areas once sutures are removed. Pressure points must be watched.

For some patients it takes a very long time to heal. This is more the norm than those patients who are quick healers and back to normal in no time. It can take weeks or months to look and feel better. There are often areas of concern, that take a very long time to return to ‘normal’ People come in for surgery with unrealistic expectations of what the healing time might be and expect to look perfect for a wedding, for example, six weeks after a face lift .

Always take into consideration that complications that can arise. Often times, patients do not give themselves enough ‘down time’ after surgery which can result in unanticipated frustrations. Again, nothing is “just that simple” when it involves a scalpel and sutures!

Some patients suffer a post-surgery form of depression that can last a few days or weeks. This is normal and will pass.

If you have liposuction in your thighs, for example, but eventually change your lifestyle so that you continue to consume more calories or exercise less, you will still gain weight and put on fat cells . The fat cells will find new areas to deposit rather than go to the areas of liposuction.

If you have a plastic surgery complication, such as a hematoma, infection or seroma – you will end up having to see your plastic surgeon often post-operatively. Perhaps more than anticipated when you booked your surgery. Make sure that you are prepared for these unexpected visits.

People have unrealistic expectations about plastic surgery. A person who does not have aesthetics that please them before having a face lift is not going to be transformed after having had one. If all goes well, will look like a younger and more refreshed version of themselves.

Patients who seem to have the most difficult time after surgery are rhinoplasty patients. Nose jobs just cannot heal fast enough for the patient, often creating a high level of disappointment and depression. The object of your concern is sitting in the middle of your face and while the nose swelling takes a long time to go down and does so in small increments, one tends to sit and watch it and watch it for any sign of change, that just can’t happen fast enough! If you could do the surgery and fast forward one year, you would see the results in a much more relaxed way.

And here is Mary talking to you, cosmetic surgery should not be done on a whim: after a break up: a death, or a divorce. Many people choose to do cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons – someone else is pressuring them into changing something. The ideal candidate for a cosmetic procedure is someone who has been bothered themselves by a certain thing for years. It’s your body and your choice, but second to reputation, be impressed by your rapport with your surgeon. Your life is in his /her hands.
